The Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court has formally convicted Rwandan national Vincent Murekezi of corruption almost nine years after he was tried in absentia.

Meanwhile, Murekezi is also fighting extradition after fleeing his country before his conviction of genocide charges. The court is scheduled to rule in the extradition matter in two weeks.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Murekezi in December last year after noting that he was a wanted person in a corruption case dating back to 2008.

Guilty as charged: Murekezi (R)

ACB deputy director general Reyneck Matemba confirmed that principal resident magistrate Patrick Chirwa had formally convicted Murekezi.

“I can confirm that the court has formally convicted him. He was already convicted in absentia when he jumped bail what remained was to read out the judegment to him,” Matemba said.

Murekezi’s co-accused Komani Nyasulu was already convicted and served his sentence.

State prosecutor Mike Kalonga and Murekezi’s lawyer are expected to file sentencing submissions within 14 days before he is sentenced.

Meanwhile, the Rwandan government has said it is prepared to send a team of witnesses to be cross-examined on documents the State tendered in court to support submissions that Murekezi was a genocide fugitive who was convicted in his home country. n

What would have happened to this man if the media had not leak the information that he was a wanted man in Rwanda for genocide?
Who was protecting this man and at what cost………..the minister of Home Affairs came out the other day saying they have no official request from Rwanda to extradite this him and now every Malawian knows that Rwanda has been sending requests since 2008………what’s going on here?
How did this man managed to get citizenship and our valuable passport which many genuine Malawians sweat blood to get? Again who was helping him to achieve all this and at what cost?
